real estate social networking

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

hands.jpg I came across a great image by a photographer by the name of Alex. This is an image that will be used on the homepage of my new real estate social network that will be launching soon.

To me, this image, means:

Social, Networking, Togetherness, Industry Shaping, Openness, Connections, Transparency.

What does this image mean to you in one or two words?

RM Bradley is closing - ouch

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Banker Tradesman is reporting that RM Bradley is closing shop. This is a small brokerage that should have sold out a few years ago when they had the opportunity to do so. I am sure they were approached by one of the bigger co’s. In fact, I am almost certain the principals could have sold out but refused.

I used to focus on the back bay and I dealt with them often. They had a lot of nice listings but didn’t want to change with the times. They could have grown behind the RM Bradley name, but didn’t because they rejected technology. Old school real estate can bring you down.

I’d take those listings and use technology to embrace them!

I don’t know why but I like this

Seth Godin has extended Squidoo by creating a spin off for real estate professionals. Its called: squidoo zippers.

How do you figure out a five year projection and sound credible

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Every entrepreneur involved in a startup needs to figure out projections for 5 years. This is always a problem because who knows what can happen during this 5 year period. Unfortunately, most will take the numbers out of thin air. Don’t do this. According to Jim Cramer you should take a good hard look at your market (where the money is going to come from) and break down that segment .5%.

So if you are selling kids clothing, find out how much is being spent on an annual basis then tell yourself you can take .5% of this market with your product.

Anything more than .5% will kill your credibility. Sounds good to me.

Real Estate isn’t like any other sector. Most services compete with one another and on the RE Consumer Service level it seems like everyone helps one another. Zillow and Trulia are somewhat competitors but they still help eachother out. Everyone who provides consumer services within real estate all want the same thing, an ecosystem. Real Estate is without a platform for services to be built off of. Without a platform nothing can survive. Since the nation has so many MLS systems - the market is just too fragmented and everyone wants control. Not too mention MLS restricts and hinders innovation like its their reason for existing. NAR is so slack, they were late and missed out on buying their domain. Move inc. built a business based on a domain name that NAR failed to buy.

Anyways, if you have a product or service these are a few sites you should reach out to. If I missed any please add to comments.

Dear Techcrunch:

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

I have been a reader for the longest time. Mike, I was the one who asked you who you were and suggested that you put up an About page. You did, thanks. I have a new beef with your site and I am annoyed. You have all this great info but the sites search sucks big donkey balls. I know you guys wrote about a real estate service last year and now I cannot find it. Your Swicki Search is shit. I am sorry but the results are so off. Buildings Manager

I searched for Real Estate but the results were coming from every site but yours. I came to your site to search your site not other shit sites. If I want a mixture of shit I will go to Google, Yahoo or MSN.

Why can’t you create or implement a search tool that will allow me to find what I am looking for.

Please fix your search.

My favorite service of all time MBL was just redeveloped. The service and widget is starting to evolve. Check out my right sidebar.

So much better now. Please join my small community.

Gotta love when a service is built by a Masshole.

Is your MLS providing feeds to promote your listings. MLSPIN feed partner list.

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

I have said it a million times. MLSPIN is by far the most advanced MLS in the US. The UI is uncomparable to any other MLS system. Of course MLSPIN is a private company and not run by a Realtor Association, however, they work very closely with the Boards. Most realtor boards run MLS - sucks for agents. You have no idea what you are missing. Trust me, I know because I belong to a few MLS systems and the others are so behind MLSPIN.

MLSPIN Partners. One click gets your listings on these third party sites. I might have missed a few.
